NASA Selects PRIMA to Explore the Dusty Universe

A planned far-infrared telescope will investigate planet formation, galaxies and black holes.

NASA Selects PRIMA to Explore the Dusty Universe
NASA · Original article

NASA has selected the Probe far-Infrared Mission for Astrophysics, or PRIMA, as the first mission in its Probe Explorers class. The project is entering preliminary design and technology development; it has not launched.

PRIMA would observe far-infrared light, filling a valuable gap between Webb’s observations and radio astronomy. This wavelength range helps scientists investigate dust that hides important stages of planet and galaxy formation. The planned telescope has a mirror about 5.9 feet across.

The mission would also investigate black holes and the movement of elements through galaxies. NASA is targeting a 2033 launch followed by five years of observations. Those plans remain subject to development milestones and a confirmation review before the project advances to its next major phase.
